How to maximize your Pilates personal training and group class revenue during a recession

During this tough economic climate, Pilates instructors find themselves with a smaller client base than they did two, even three years ago. For instance, at our New York studio, Pilates on Fifth, our numbers are still down about 30% from what they were two years ago. Ouch!! But we are not alone. We are fortunate to know Pilates studio, Yoga studio, and even spa owners around the country, and most are experiencing a similar situation.

XTEND™ has been the answer! It not only adds a vertical element to all the Pilates mat exercises and Pilates Reformer work that we do, but we feel like we’ve taken a complete ballet class, without the fuss!

PILATES AND MUSCLE CONFUSION

One of our viewers recently wrote in, asking us if the principles of muscle confusion can be applied to Pilates. Programs like P90X have soared in popularity due to the emphasis on Muscle Confusion, and their practitioners have seen amazing results. "Muscle Confusion", most basically, is derived from two training principles: the Specificity of Training Principle and the Overload Principle. Both of these principles can be applied to Pilates so that you will continue to reap all the benefits, including flat abs fast, lean legs and a lifted butt, and a stronger core.

Now is the time of year that everyone flocks back to the gym, the personal trainer, the Pilates class, or the yoga studio after weeks, or even months of abandoning the regular "routine". At our Pilates studio, we too are jumping on the Resolution bandwagon with the implementation & promotion of “Fit & Fabulous in 50 Days!”(link to the page highlighting the plan), assuming, of course that 50 days would be about the time it takes to make a lifestyle change. Actually, it's very easy to resolve to make a change, either by deleting or adding something to our lifestyle, but how easy is it to MAKE the change?

Online Resources for Pilates
2/16/2009

If you're looking for a New York City Pilates certification center, keep in mind such centers vary quite a bit in technique and quality. Some teach only the basics of each exercise and little else. Then they leave it to you to figure out why the Pilates exercises improve the body, and how to pass on the instruction to others. At Pilates on Fifth, however, we emphasize the importance of understanding both the principles of anatomy and the best methods of Pilates instruction. After all, clients who truly appreciate fitness and the benefits of Pilates instruction will want a trainer who deeply respects and feels passionately about this fun and exciting exercise.

Spice up your Pilates with the Stability Ball and more!
1/12/2009

Our New York City stability ball workouts are great for balance. You'll work the deep muscles of your abdominals just by staying balanced on your over-sized stability ball. We find that these workouts are much more effective than working on abdominal strength and balance separately. Endless situps and simple balancing exercises quickly grow dull. Stability ball workouts, on the other hand, are lively, interesting, and playful, as well as physically challenging.

Why At Home Pilates Workouts are so Easy and Effective
10/5/2008

We have a joint confession to make: WE GET BORED EASILY, and we believe that affordable exercise at home doesn't mean purchasing only one exercise DVD and then simply doing that over, and over, and over again! Not only will you get bored, but your body will, too. One of the main reasons we created UltimatePilatesWorkouts.com, in fact, is that we know how easy it is to lose interest in any exercise DVD or exercise program, even if it's your favorite.... Thus, we hope that we've filled and continue to fill this site with enough of a variety of Pilates workouts and core strengthening program so that muscles, brains and bodies stay entertained.
